Tricia Hughey picture

Tricia L. Hughey
Chief Executive Officer
Vice President of Regional Operations, West, APP

Ms. Hughey has over 30 years of experience in the administration and operations of anatomic pathology laboratories. Ms.Hughey is currently Vice President of Regional Operations, West for American Pathology Partners, and also serves as Chief Executive Officer of UniPath/APP Laboratories, a position she has held for over a decade. During her tenure at UniPath, she has led many initiatives in cytology, histology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular pathology.

Previously, she has held management and laboratory positions with other anatomic pathology groups, including Pathology Partners (now Caris Diagnostics), as well as hospital clinical laboratories. Ms. Hughey is an active speaker at several national pathology conferences, including The Executive War College (The Dark Report), Washington G2 Conferences, American Pathology Foundation, and CAP. Ms. Hughey has been a member of the Pathology Management Assembly of MGMA since 1985, and was a member on the committee providing recommendations for CLIA 88 guidelines. She was also one of the first non-physicians appointed by the CAP Board of Governors to one of their committees; and she continues to serve on the CAP Practice Management Committee. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Pathology Foundation (APF). Ms. Hughey holds a BA in business administration and economics from Regis College.

John Hazard picture

John D. Hazard
Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Hazard has over 20 years of experience in the laboratory management. Most recently, he was laboratory manager for Western Pathology Associates, Phoenix, Arizona and prior to that, he served for two years as Director of Operations, Bostwick Laboratories, Tempe, Arizona. Previously, Mr. Hazard served as manager of Anatomic Pathology for Quest Diagnostics, Denver, Colorado, and as Laboratory Manager for Cockerell & Associates / AmeriPath, Dallas, Texas. Prior to that, he was Director of Operations with DIANON Systems, Inc., Stratford, Connecticut where he spent eight years. Mr. Hazard started his laboratory management career at Kyto Diagnostics, New City, NY, where he was Technical Manager for Histology and Cytology.

Mr. Hazard holds a B.S. in business administration/accounting from SUNY at New Paltz, and an A.S. in laboratory science from Baylor University, Waco, Texas. He also attended ASCP School of Cytotechnology at the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Hazard is certified by the ASCP as a cytotechnologist and histotechnologist, and is registered as a Cytotechnologist by the International Academy of Cytology.

Dr. Sirgi picture

Karim E. Sirgi, M.D.
President, UniPath, P.C.

Dr. Sirgi is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. He is currently the president of UniPath P.C., the 20+ pathologist group serving UniPath/APP Laboratories and several hospitals and healthcare facilities in Colorado. Dr. Sirgi is also a member of the joint strategy board of UniPath, P.C. and American Pathology Partners and the Medical Director of laboratories at The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC) and of the Colorado Center for Laboratory Medical Sciences, one of the premier medical technology schools in the U.S. His recent leadership activities include serving as president of the medical staff at Presbyterian/Saint Luke’s Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, as well as chair of the HealthOne Presidents Council, an advisory body of the medical staff leaderships of a seven-hospital system.

Dr. Sirgi is a diplomate of the Saint Joseph University School of Medicine, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Booth Memorial Medical Center in New York City, a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University Medical Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, and an additional subspecialty fellowship in General and Interventional Cytopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Sirgi was on the faculty staff at both institutions after completion of each fellowship. Dr. Sirgi served as chairman of the Pathology Department at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (1997-2003) and president of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists (2003/2004). He is also a former member of the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology Resource Committee and of the Gynecology Oncology Group pathology review committee. In surveys by 5280 Magazine, Dr. Sirgi was voted best pathologist in Denver by his clinical peers for several years (1998-1999, 2003-2009).

In addition to diagnostic pathology, Dr. Sirgi has a professional interest in, and has lectured about, the business of pathology, emerging technologies, medical groups dynamics and systems improvement. Dr. Sirgi is currently enrolled in the MBA program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dr. Venrick picture

Michael G. Venrick, M.D.
Medical Director
Board Member, UniPath, P.C.

Dr. Venrick is board-certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. He is also board-certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Venrick has spent his career focusing on women's health and new diagnostics assays and is regarded as a thought leader in this area. Dr. Venrick is currently the Medical Director of UniPath Central Laboratories, and a member of the Board of UniPath, PC.

After earning a B.S. degree in biology and psychology from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado, Dr. Venrick earned his M.D. degree in 1983 from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, Colorado. He then went on to complete an internship and his residency at the Letterman Army Medical Center, U.S. Army in San Fransisco, California. Following his residency, Dr. Venrick completed a fellowship in Cytopathology at George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Dr. Venrick also served as Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and prior to joining UniPath, Dr. Venrick held several positions, including staff pathologist at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

Along with his many affiliations and awards, Dr. Venrick is a member of several professional organizations, including Colorado Medical Society, ASCP, CAP, American Society of Cytopathology, Denver Medical Society, and the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologist (president 1994-1995). Dr. Venrick served in the U.S. Army and honorably discharged as Major in 1990.

Dr. Payne picture

Deborah "Debs" Payne, Ph.D.
Vice President of Molecular Services, APP

Dr. Payne joined in 2009 to lead our molecular laboratory division and currently serves as Vice President of Molecular Services. She was most recently Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where she was also Associate Professor of Pathology. She was also Director and a founding member of the Division of Molecular Diagnostics in the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Payne received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas; and performed part of her post-doctoral training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Payne is nationally recognized in molecular diagnostics, is an active speaker, well published and active member of numerous committees and industry organizations. She has held offices as the Chair of the Training and Education Committee for the Association of Molecular Pathology, as Chair of the Molecular Pathology division (2002-2003) for the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), as the Co-Chair for the NACB Laboratory Practice Guidelines Committee on Pharmacogenetics, as the only U.S. member is on the Committee for Molecular Diagnostics for the International Federation for Clinical Chemistry (IFCC), and as member of the Board of Directors for the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Payne is also a member of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) committee on reference materials, an advisor for the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), and a member of the Board of Directors for the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC). Dr. Payne also served as a voting member for the Molecular and Clinical Genetics Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Dr. Payne has authored or co-authored several book chapters, and 55 manuscripts, and is on the editorial board for LabMedicine. She is certified as a clinical laboratory technologist in Molecular Biology MB(ASCP), holds a Diplomate in Laboratory Management DLM(ASCP). She is also a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FACB), and is board-certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Molecular Diagnostics (DABCC) and by the American Board of Medical Microbiology (DABCC).

Karen Babish picture

Karen F. Babish
Chief Financial Officer

Ms. Babish, who has over 20 years of financial management experience, has served as Chief Financial Officer since 1996. She is also a member of the executive committee. During her tenure at UniPath, she has managed financial operations for both the UniPath Central Laboratories and UniPath, PC, the affiliated pathology practice. During those years, she assisted in the growth of the organization, both organically and through the merger of two local pathology groups that formed the core of the existing organization.

Previously, Ms. Babish worked for nearly ten years at a non-profit organization that served developmentally disabled individuals. Prior to that, she spent six years in public accounting before moved to industry accounting. Ms. Babish holds a B.S. in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Northern Colorado.

Kristin Marriott picture

Kristin Marriott
Director of Support Services

Ms. Marriott has over 20 years of administrative/management experience in anatomic pathology, both in hospital and outreach environments. Currently serving as director of support services, she is responsible for an operation that provides full service pathologyservices to eight metropolitan hospitals in Denver, Colorado.

Ms. Marriott has been with UniPath and its predecessors for over two decades. During her tenure, she has successfully led multiple support departments and functions through various levels of change. Ms. Marriott has played an integral role in the design of new anatomic pathology reporting systems, including building the libraries, training the staff, managing the transition and executing the implementation. For several years, she has been invited to lend that broad expertise to her colleagues, through performance as an inspector for the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Ms. Marriott is an active member of ADHI, a professional society representing the highest level of accuracy, privacy and security in the U.S. healthcare system to protect public health, increase patient safety, and improve quality care for healthcare consumers. Ms. Marriott attended Metropolitan State College and the University of Colorado at Denver with an emphasis in business management.

Dr. Lin picture

Hong Lin, Ph.D.
Technical Director of Flow Cytometry Laboratory

Dr. Lin leads our flow cytometry technical operation as Director of Flow Cytometry. Dr. Lin was most recently Manager, Cell Marker Laboratory, Department of Clinical laboratories at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, N.Y.

Previously, Dr. Lin served as Laboratory Supervisor and Research Associate, Cellular Immunology Laboratory, Department of Pediatrics/Division of Hematology/Oncology of Weil Medical College of Cornell University, New York, N.Y. Before that, Dr. Lin was a research associate in Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Lin holds a B.S. degree from Agriculture College, and a Ph.D. from Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China. She then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detrot Michigan. Dr. Lin received several awards and has published extensively. She is member of the American Association for Cancer Reasearch and an active member of the American Association of Hematology.

Dr. Lin has extensive experience in flow cytometric immunophenotyping for leukocytes (lymphocyte subsets, helper/suppressor T cell quantitation, myelomocytic immunophenotyping) and neoplastic hematolymphoid cells (leukemia, lymphoma, T, B, non-lymphoid cells, and Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria), as well as flow cytometric intracellular cytokine assays, and DNA cell cycle analysis. She also has direct clinical trials experience, having conducted cellular immunological tests for clinical trial “A phase I/II study of Maitake MD-fraction in breast cancer patients”.

Deb Evans picture

Deb Evans, CT(ASCP)
Director of Quality & Performance, APP

During her 30+ year career in the laboratory industry, Ms. Evans has worked in a variety of areas including laboratory operations and management, scientific research, teaching/education, quality improvement and safety. She is currently Director o Quality & Performance at American Pathology Partners.

Prior to joining APP, Ms. Evans was a laboratory consultant focusing on a variety of operational areas, including laboratory workflow and quality improvement, facility planning, specimen cycle-time analysis, and supply utilization, among many other areas. Previously, for nearly two decades, Ms. Evans has held operating positions at several laboratory companies including Doctors Laboratory, Gainsville, Florida; Ameripath North Texas, Dallas, Texas; Quest Diagnostics, Irving, Texas; and ProPath, Dallas, Texas. These roles included laboratory management, policy development, best practices, six sigma/LEAN projects, quality assurance & regulatory compliance among other responsibilities.

Ms. Evans holds a B.S. in education from Bowling Green State University. She continued her education at the University of Miami to pursue certification as a Cytotechnologist CT(ASCP). Ms. Evans ultimately worked there for 10 years, during which period she was involved in numerous research projects/scientific papers in flow cytometry, cytology,and drug outcome monitoring. In addition, Ms. Evans also provided support and taught cytology students and pathology residents as an Educational Coordinator.
