Michael G. Venrick, M.D.

Dr. Venrick is board-certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. He is also board-certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Venrick has spent his career focusing on women's health and new diagnostics assays and is regarded as a thought leader in this area. Dr. Venrick is currently the Medical Director of UniPath Central Laboratories, and a member of the Board of UniPath, PC.

After earning a B.S. degree in biology and psychology from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado, Dr. Venrick earned his M.D. degree in 1983 from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, Colorado. He then went on to complete an internship and his residency at the Letterman Army Medical Center, U.S. Army in San Francisco, California. Following his residency, Dr. Venrick completed a fellowship in Cytopathology at George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Dr. Venrick also served as Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and prior to joining UniPath, Dr. Venrick held several positions, including staff pathologist at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

Along with his many affiliations and awards, Dr. Venrick is a member of several professional organizations, including Colorado Medical Society, ASCP, CAP, American Society of Cytopathology, Denver Medical Society, and the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologist (president 1994-1995). Dr. Venrick served in the U.S. Army and honorably discharged as Major in 1990.

Shalini Chahal, M.D.

Dr. Chahal is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Her areas of interest include cytopathology, urologic pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, and gynecologic pathology.

Dr. Chahal received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College, University of Delhi, New Delhi, India. She then completed an internship at Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital and Smt. Sucheta Kripalani Hospital in New Delhi, India. Dr. Chahal completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, Colorado. She then went on to complete a fellowship in surgical pathology at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas.

Since fellowship training, Dr. Chahal has devoted her career to advancing women’s diagnostics specifically related to gynecologic oncology and breast pathology and has published in both areas. Dr. Chahal is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Walter E. Madsen, M.D.

Dr. Madsen is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. His primary areas of interest are surgical pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, urologic pathology, and immunohistochemistry.

After earning a B.A. degree in biology from Colorado College, Dr. Madsen attended Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, Missouri, receiving his M.D. degree in 1983. After medical school, he completed an internship and his residency training in General Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cook County Hospital. In addition to clinical surgery duties, he performed research on the effect of steroid hormones on sarcoma tumor cell growth, as an American Cancer Society Oncology Fellow.

Dr. Madsen went on to complete a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, Colorado, and a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, with Dr. Louis P. Dehner.

Dr. Madsen is based at Presbyterian / St. Luke’s Hospital, Denver, Colorado, where he is Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology, and the Director of Anatomic Pathology.

Ernest Sartorio, Jr., M.D.

Dr. Sartorio is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Sartorio has many years of experience pursuing special interests in cytopathology and women’s health. He has also been a member of the medical staff in several area hospitals served by UniPath.

After earning a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Califrornia at Berkeley, Dr. Sartorio earned his M.D. degree from Howard University, Washington, DC in 1975. He then went on to complete an internship and his residency at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Sartorio is a member of numerous professional organizations including the College of American Pathologists, Denver Medical Society, Colorado Medical Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is also a member of the American Board of Pathology and the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Board.

Dr. Sartorio currently serves as clinical coordinator of Microbiology for the Adventist Health System Hospital Laboratories. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of UniPath, P.C.

Karim E. Sirgi, M.D.

Dr. Sirgi is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. He is currently the president of UniPath P.C., the 20+ pathologist group serving UniPath/APP Laboratories and several hospitals and healthcare facilities in Colorado. Dr. Sirgi is also a member of the joint strategy board of UniPath, P.C. and American Pathology Partners and the Medical Director of laboratories at The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC) and of the Colorado Center for Laboratory Medical Sciences, one of the premier medical technology schools in the U.S. His recent leadership activities include serving as president of the medical staff at Presbyterian/Saint Luke’s Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, as well as chair of the HealthOne Presidents Council, an advisory body of the medical staff leaderships of a seven-hospital system.

Dr. Sirgi is a diplomate of the Saint Joseph University School of Medicine, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Booth Memorial Medical Center in New York City, a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University Medical Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, and an additional subspecialty fellowship in General and Interventional Cytopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Sirgi was on the faculty staff at both institutions after completion of each fellowship. Dr. Sirgi served as chairman of the Pathology Department at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (1997-2003) and president of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists (2003/2004). He is also a former member of the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology Resource Committee and of the Gynecology Oncology Group pathology review committee. In surveys by 5280 Magazine, Dr. Sirgi was voted best pathologist in Denver by his clinical peers for several years (1998-1999, 2003-2009).

In addition to diagnostic pathology, Dr. Sirgi has a professional interest in, and has lectured about, the business of pathology, emerging technologies, medical groups dynamics and systems improvement. Dr. Sirgi is currently enrolled in the MBA program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

James M. Small, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Small is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and the subspecialty of Medical Microbiology. Dr. Small has extensive diagnostic experience in cytopathology and women’s health.

After graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. degree in chemistry from the Colorado College, Dr. Small attended Duke University Medical Center’s Medical Scientist Training Program, graduating with an M.D. and Ph.D. in Medical Mycology in 1983. He completed his pathology residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Small has served as medical director for two Colorado hospitals and as Vice Chairman, Department of Pathology for Presbyterian / St. Luke's Medical Center, Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Small is active in several professional organizations including being a past President of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists, and member of the College of American Pathologists, the Gynecologic Oncology Group, as well as various advisory committees. Dr. Small has also served as a Study Pathologist for several Gynecologic Oncology Group clinical trials.

Philip T. Stoffel, M.D.

Dr. Stoffel is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology; and is also certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Stoffel's primary specialty is in surgical pathology; he also has special interests and experience in nephropathology and gynecologic pathology.

After earning a B.A. degree in english from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Dr. Stoffel earned his M.D. degree in 1976 from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. He then completed an internship in Surgery at the University of Colorado Medical Center and Affiliated Hospitals, Denver, Colorado. Dr. Stoffel completed his residency in the Department of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology at Presbyterian Medical Center, Denver, Colorado.

For several years Dr. Stoffel has been the Medical Director of Pathology at the Medical Center of Aurora - South Campus. He has also served as member of the pathology staff at several Denver area hospitals, including Avista, Littleton, Parker and Porter Adventist Hospitals.

Elaine D. Wagner, M.D.

Dr. Wagner is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. Her primary area of focus is women’s health.

After earning a B.S. degree summa cum laude in biology from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Wagner received her M.D. degree in 1982 from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Texas, where she also completed her residency. She then completed a fellowship in Cytopathology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas in 1988. Dr. Wagner is a member of the College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Society of Cytopathology.

After joining UniPath in 1988, she has been member of the pathology staff in several hospitals served by UniPath. She is currently Medical Director for Platte Valley Medical Center laboratory and the Director of Cytopathology at Porter, Littleton, and Avista Adventist Hospitals.

Gordon V. Webb, M.D.

Dr. Webb is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. He is also board-certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners. His primary areas of interest are in surgical pathology and women's health.

After earning a B.S. degree with highest honors in microbiology from Oregon State University, Dr. Webb graduated cum laude with an M.D. degree from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center in Portland, Oregon in 1980. Following medical school, he completed his residency at University of Colorado Health Science Center, Denver, Colorado. Dr. Webb then completed a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California.

Dr. Webb is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Pathology Foundation and the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Webb is the Medical Director of Anatomic Pathology at Parker Adventist Hospital. His numerous professional duties in pathology practice include sitting on the Cancer Activities Committee, Clinical Excellence Committee and the Technical Advisory Committee.
